Reyes: I was For Troop Augmentation Before I Was Against It

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

Congressman Silvestre Reyes, lately famous for his Sunni/Shi’a mixup, makes the news again for flip-flopping on troop augmentation in Iraq.

In an interview with Newsweek back on December 5th, Reyes said, “We have to consider the need for additional troops to be in Iraq, to take out the militias and stabilize Iraq.” When asked how many, he replied, “I would say 20,000 to 30,000…”

By January 11th, Reyes was beating a different drum. “We don’t have the capability to escalate even to this minimal level,” he said.

Reyes was for troop augmentation, before he was against it.

Townhall Blog’s Mary Katharine Ham and Katie Favazza made a hilarious, must-see video of Reyes’ and other Dems’ previous comments, overlaid on a recent Durbin the Turban speech. Bonus: an idiotic comment from “jetpilot,” who slams the ladies for their age and cuteness and urges them to leave politics to older people.

However, speaking to for the benefit of the local El Paso populace (El Paso is a big military town and reaps much in economic benefits from soldiers), Reyes played the good soldier, saying, “”We have to be mindful that [Bush is] the commander in chief.”
